Reading is one of the primary sources of learning new things outside the teacher aided classroom environment. Reading helps the kids to taste the joy of self-learning at a young age and that will help them do better academically and life in general.
The habit of reading improves the speed of grasping and the attention span. It helps with comprehension and communication skills. It also kindles their imagination and creates a sense of worldliness and compassion.
Creating a love for reading among children can turn out to be a tough job if the interest to read doesn’t happen naturally with your kids. Some kids do take to reading on their own and it always leaves a positive impact on them. But if your kid doesn’t fall into that category, then fret not, there are different strategies to encourage them to read.
Mark a separate time period each day for reading hour on your calendar and ensure your kid is relaxed and ready for it mentally. Help them to look forward to the hour than adding it to their chore list.
2. Help them choose appropriate books
Finding books that they will love based on their interests is important to nurture their love for reading. If they are interested in dinosaurs, get them books about dinosaurs according to their age. Letting them have a say in what they read will go a long way in making them life long readers.
3. Make a game out of it.
Challenges and healthy rewards are another way to kindle their passion for reading. You can give them a target number of pages to read every week. Include a friend or sibling in the reading activity and encourage a buddy reading system.
4. Encourage discussions
Take a genuine interest in what they are reading and encourage discussions about it. Ask them about their favorite parts and characters from the book. Even if you do not know answers to some of their questions about the book, take time to help them out.
5. Expose them to different genres and subjects
Show them the varieties of genres that they can enjoy from mysteries, fantasy, comics, humor to even how-to books. Do not restrict their choice of genre and let them test waters before they choose their favorite. Subscribing to children’s magazines with their name would be a great addition.
6. Be an example
Action speaks better than words. Show them your love for reading and help them understand it is a joyous process to delve into new worlds and stories. Ask them to read aloud to a younger sibling. Create a family that reads together.
It is no secret that the children who read for pleasure have a huge advantage in school because they are already open to learning new concepts and ideas over their peers. With the gaining popularity of e-readers, reading has become more and more accessible to everyone and it would be a crime if we do not use them for our children.
We, at Mount Banyan Global School, understand the need for passion for self-learning and reading for pleasure and our teaching style is created around such values. Contact us via firstname.lastname@example.org or fill the contact form here to know more.
