We have all read the fine print – the one who is charismatic and courageous and extroverted make for good leaders. But research states that there are all types of leaders. While some may be extroverted, others might be calm and introverted but may still lead a crowd forward.
But as parents, we want to bestow and prepare our kids for the impeding future! Let the record show that “Leaders are not born, they are made”. Most children learn the very basic qualities from their parents so as parents, take it upon yourself to lead by example and let your child learn it from you.
In this article, we are going to take about 5 simple ways in which you can help develop leadership qualities in your children!
1) VOLUNTEER TOGETHER
Volunteering is the first hand experience your child may get to be a part of a “team”. Pick up local initiatives and go to volunteer with your child. As they learn to do work as a team, they pick up many skills like communication, listening, etc. Volunteering experiences have also proven benefits of inducing empathy and values in kids.
2) SET THEM FREE
As parents, we may have countless notions of how our child to make a name of themselves in this world but our kids, are far more creative. So, as parents, we owe it to them to encourage and allow them to follow their dreams. Do not douse off their curiosity and their inquisitiveness. The more they question, they more they understand and work to create!
3) DEVELOP A SOLUTION BASED MENTALITY
Problem solving is one of the important aspect of logic and reason skills for a kid. The more they focus their mind and energy is working towards a solution, the more they believe in their own strengths. Problem solving is essential for building the self-confidence of a child! When faced with a problem, urge them to look at things differently. Encourage them to come up with different solutions and together, you both decide the best way forward.
4) INCULCATE A READING HABIT
Like mentioned before, a child imitates their parents without thinking twice. So as parents, work towards introducing your child to more books and inculcate a good reading habit into the family. You can set aside a time for each day and sit and read together! Reading enhances their thinking process and their knowledge of the world become refined. You can also try taking your child to the library and let them pick the books which may interest them further to read a book.
An important quality of a leader is to listen! While this may be hard to explain to your toddler, you can make them inculcate this into their habits by making sure that they listen before speaking, understand before reacting etc. You as a parent have the onus to make sure that your child learns that from you, which means, we as parents have to better listeners!
Everything said and done, the responsibility of a leader is huge and it is up to the child to take it up. We can try our best to make sure that they learn the best qualities by inculcating good communication skills and listening skills.
