Countless surveys have been conducted and they have all reported back with appalling results about the screen time children have these days. And the hours are increasing at a rapid rate.
As a parent, this might be a huge concern for you wondering if you are doing the right thing by exposing them to different gadgets. The amount of time they spend online is inversely proportional to the hours they should be spending outdoors so it can be a cause of incessant worry.
But change is inevitable and digital devices are here for the long run. So instead of resisting the change, you can look at ways to work around the situation. This can be done in simple ways by making sure that you remain in control of your child’s screen time and gently nudging them towards investing their screen time in learning something meaningful.
1) CREATION VS CONSUMPTION
Consumption refers to feeding on online content without any interaction. Like when the child is watching a series or a video. Creation is when the child is actively participating in creating something through the digital medium. Be it a simple drawing or an interactive game that promotes learning, in this, the child is actively involved and is engaging via the medium. Thus, encourage them to be more of creators than consumers and engage them in fun ways of creation – like drawing with them, encouraging them to read out loud, etc.
2) KEEP A CHECK ON WHO THEY ARE FOLLOWING
The digital world has lent enough scope for us to follow our favorite music icons, sports stars, etc. It allows our kids to keep in contact or follow their favorite stars. So, encourage them to follow people and celebrities that can fuel their passions.
For example, if they love space, search for NASA and related accounts. If they love photography, help them find great photographers sharing their work online. If children follow people that teach and promote growth, it will create a ripple effect by setting off a dream and a goal in them. Inspiration is one of the key promoters for enabling ambitions and dreams in children so make sure that they invest their time online wisely.
3) ENCOURAGE DIGITAL DECLUTTER REGULARLY
Decluttering is a good of ensuring that your child reassesses his choices and invest in newer productive stuff. Start by encouraging your child to remove the apps which they no longer use. Through this, you are giving your child some autonomy over their choices and enabling them to look for better choices. Encourage them to invest their time productively in meaningful apps that promote learning and engagement.
Children tend to intuitively learn from their parents so you need to adhere to a strict discipline as well. So, practice what you preach as well! Show them ways in which you are using the digital medium as a productive tool that enables growth and development for you.
Most importantly, set aside an off-screen time, which the family shall adhere to strictly. In that period, the family shall gather together for fun storytelling sessions, playing games or maybe just sitting down to have conversations. This will help your child get adhered to a strict discipline and help themselves get used to having a specific time for digital devices.
For effective ways to handle your child’s screen, ensure by making sure that you have meaningful activities and engage them productively. The rest is bound to follow on its own! We at Mount Banyan Global School is committed to bringing out the best in our children by teaching them other key-value addition activities.
